Choosing a new mattress can seem complicated, but with a few clear criteria the decision becomes much simpler. This guide sums up the most important factors and how to choose based on your bedroom, sleeping position and budget. If you're in Málaga or Córdoba, we also explain how our delivery and installation works.
1. First work out your mattress size
Before choosing the type of mattress, check your bed's dimensions:
| Size | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| 90×190 / 90×200 | Standard single bed (1 person) |
| 105×190 / 105×200 | Wider single (1 person) |
| 135×190 / 135×200 | Small double or double teen bed |
| 150×190 / 150×200 | Standard double (2 people) |
| 160×200 | Comfortable double (2 people) |
| 180×200 | Spacious double (2 people) |
If you're not sure of the size, measure the bed base with a tape measure. The mattress must match the inside measurement of the base exactly, with no gaps.
2. Choose the type of mattress based on how you sleep
If you sleep on your side
Sleeping on your side concentrates weight on the shoulder and hip. You need a mattress that relieves those pressure points: memory foam o latex with medium-soft firmness.
If you sleep on your back
Sleeping on your back needs firm lumbar support but with some give in the lumbar area. A mattress hybrid (pocket springs + memory foam) or a memory foam mattress with medium-firm firmness is ideal.
If you sleep on your front
This position needs a flat, firm surface so as not to strain the neck or lumbar area. A pocket spring mattress o un high-density HR with medium-firm firmness is the best option.
If you sleep as a couple with different positions or weights
Prioritise independent support for each sleeper: pocket springs o a good-density memory foam mattress. Bonnell springs are NOT recommended for a double bed.
3. Choose the firmness based on your weight
- Under 60 kg: medium or medium-soft firmness. A harder surface doesn't adapt enough to a light body.
- 60–90 kg: medium or medium-firm firmness. The most standard range, compatible with most models.
- Más de 90 kg: high firmness or high-density pocket springs. Memory foam can sag sooner if the density is low.
4. Type of mattress based on health issues
- Lower back or back pain: memory foam with a reinforced lumbar zone, or a hybrid (springs + memory foam).
- Shoulder or hip pain: memory foam or latex with medium-soft firmness.
- Allergies or asthma: natural latex (hypoallergenic and antibacterial) or memory foam with anti-dust-mite treatment.
- Excessive heat at night: pocket springs, latex or memory foam with graphene.
- Reduced mobility (older people): memory foam with medium-firm firmness that makes it easier to get up.
5. Budget: how much does a good mattress cost in Málaga
At ColchonesMalaga.com we have mattresses in every price range, with delivery and installation included in Málaga and Córdoba:
- Up to €300: entry range. Basic pocket springs or HR foam without springs. A good option for guest bedrooms or occasional use.
- 300–500 €: mid-range. Memory foam, hybrids or quality pocket springs. For daily use in the main bedroom.
- Más de 500 €: high range. Natural latex, foam-encased springs or premium memory foam. Long service life and maximum comfort.
6. Do you also need a base, ottoman bed or bed base?
If you're changing your mattress, also check the condition of the base. A worn-out base can ruin a new mattress within a few months:
- Ottoman storage bed: if you need extra storage in the bedroom.
- Upholstered base with slats: the most common option for memory foam and hybrid mattresses.
- Adjustable slatted bed base: recommended for latex mattresses.
At ColchonesMalaga.com you can order your mattress with the base included, with full delivery and assembly at your home in Málaga or Córdoba.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a mattress take to adapt to the body?
A new mattress needs between 2 and 6 weeks for the body to adapt and for the mattress to lose its initial stiffness. It's normal to feel some discomfort in the first few nights, especially if you've had a very old mattress for years.
When should you change your mattress?
We recommend changing your mattress every 8-10 years. Signs that you need to change it: you wake up with aches you didn't have before, the mattress has visible sagging, or you've had the same one for more than 10 years.
Is it better to buy the mattress and base together?
If the base is more than 8 years old or has broken or warped slats, yes. A worn-out base passes its irregularities on to the new mattress. At ColchonesMalaga.com we have mattress + ottoman bed packs with full delivery and installation.
Can I see the mattresses before buying?
We have a warehouse in Mijas, Málaga. Contact us on WhatsApp on +34 951 357 333 to arrange a visit. You can also get advice by phone or WhatsApp before placing your order online.
